3 Tips to Address Imposter Syndrome

"So scared of what your enemies will do to you. But you're the only enemy you ever seem to lose to." - Angelica, Hamilton, "Congratulations"
Sometimes, we fear what our perceived enemies might do to us. Yet, it's often our own sense of being an impostor that causes us the most harm.
Imposter syndrome can be a significant barrier that limits our progress. It's that persistent feeling of not belonging, being a fraud, and constantly comparing ourselves to others. However, it doesn't have to hold us back forever.
Here are three strategies to overcome imposter syndrome:
Tip 1 - Acknowledge It
The first step is recognizing when imposter syndrome is at play. It might manifest as a constant fear of being exposed, a reluctance to take credit for achievements, or feeling like you're not worthy of success. Acknowledging these feelings is crucial in taking control of your mindset and career trajectory.
Tip 2 - Reframe Your Perspective
It's vital to reframe the thoughts that feed imposter syndrome. Often, our minds blow the potential consequences out of proportion while downplaying the positives. Putting things into a realistic context is essential. It's also beneficial to seek the perspective of a mentor, friend, or peer who can help you challenge these limiting beliefs.
For instance, my previous belief that participating in corporate initiatives equated to being an "ass kisser" held me back. However, a friend helped me see that such initiatives drive the company forward and that my contributions were valuable. This shift in perspective eventually propelled my career forward.
Another helpful way to approach Imposter Syndrome is by referencing this mantra by Eli Barraza:
Embrace imposter syndrome.
Revel in the fact you have fooled everyone.
You are a Trickster Goddess.
You are the Imposter Child for Deception and Clever Ruses.
Finally, understand the consequences of giving into Imposter syndrome and not acting. For example, you will never get a new role if you don't apply, or new business if you don't ask for it.
Tip 3 - Take Incremental Steps
You don't have to leap from self-doubt to complete confidence suddenly. Taking small, manageable steps is critical. For instance, if the thought of updating your LinkedIn profile or posting on LinkedIn triggers self-doubt, start by making small comments on others' posts. Over time, gradually build up to sharing valuable insights and publishing your own content. Each small step forward contributes to building your professional presence.
Remember, consistent effort and learning from your successes and missteps can lead to significant progress over time.
If you're struggling with imposter syndrome, focusing on strategic moves that advance your career can help you get closer to achieving your goals.
